Stand up pouch

A stand-up pouch is a type of flexible packaging that has a gusset (a folded structural bottom) which allows it to stand upright on a shelf. It is typically made from multiple layers of plastic film, aluminum foil, or paper laminated together to provide barrier properties against moisture, oxygen, and light.

Core Structural Features

As a trader, these are the technical specs you’ll usually discuss with your suppliers:

• The Bottom Gusset: This is the “magic” part. When the pouch is filled, the gusset expands into a circular or oval base, creating a stable foundation.                                                                       

• Lamination: Most SUPs are multilayer. For example:

  • PET: For strength and high-quality printing.

  • VMPET or AL: For high barrier protection (common in coffee or snacks).

  • PE: The inner layer that allows the bag to be heat-sealed.                                                             

• Top Seal: Usually heat-sealed after filling. Many include a press-to-close zipper for reusability.
